Brazilian version of the Berg balance scale BJMBR
Miyamoto,S.T.; Lombardi Junior,I.; Berg,K.O.; Ramos,L.R.; Natour,J..
The purpose of the present study was to translate and adapt the Berg balance scale, an instrument for functional balance assessment, to Brazilian-Portuguese and to determine the reliability of scores obtained with the Brazilian adaptation. Two persons proficient in English independently translated the original scale into Brazilian-Portuguese and a consensus version was generated. Two translators performed a back translation. Discrepancies were discussed and solved by a panel. Forty patients older than 65 years and 40 therapists were included in the cultural adaptation phase. If more than 15% of therapists or patients reported difficulty in understanding an item, that item was reformulated and reapplied. The final Brazilian version was then tested on 36...

Differences between remaining ability and loss of capacity in maximum aerobic impairment BJMBR
Neder,J.A.; Nery,L.E.; Bagatin,E.; Lucas,S.R.; Anção,M.S.; Sue,D.Y..
In the evaluation of exercise intolerance of patients with respiratory diseases the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS) have proposed similar classifications for rating aerobic impairment using maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) normalized for total body weight (ml min-1 kg-1). However, subjects with the same VO2max weight-corrected values may have considerably different losses of aerobic performance (VO2max expressed as % predicted). We have proposed a new, specific method for rating loss of aerobic capacity (VO2max, % predicted) and we have compared the two classifications in a prospective study involving 75 silicotic claimants. Logistic regression analysis showed that the disagreement between rating systems (higher...

International and Brazilian Versions of WHOQOL-DIS: (in)adequacy to its Underpinnings BABT
Cantorani,José Roberto Herrera; Pedroso,Bruno; Vargas,Leandro Martinez; Picinin,Claudia Tania; Pilatti,Luiz Alberto; Gutierrez,Gustavo Luis.
Abstract: The present article aims to analyze the WHOQOL-DIS (World Health Organization Quality of Life - Disabilities) structure to verify this instrument’s adequacy to the theoretical principles underlying its construction. The methodology consists in an analysis of the WHOQOL-DIS underlying theory, prompting questions about the adequacies of this theoretical model. The procedure is complemented by a syntax analysis in order to verify the relevant questions for the score calculation. The obtained results show that the subjects “participation” and “autonomy” are not objectively present in the international version, although they are considered in the theories as justifying elements for the instrument’s creation. In the Brazilian version, there are...
